The Cancer Society says the Government should follow the Auckland Council and impose stricter regulations on sunbed operators.
The council will soon require commercial sunbed operators to be licensed and restrict the use of their sunbeds to people aged over 18.
Society national health promotion manager Jan Pearson said Government regulation for the whole country is its preferred option.
She said Brazil has already banned commercial sunbeds altogether and some Australian states are also moving towards a ban.
Dr Pearson said there is currently no way of knowing where sunbeds are operating and what sort of training operators have.
