Australia's former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced the upgrade assistance a few weeks before she resigned during a visit to Samoa.
Radio 2AP plays a major role in getting out information especially during natural disasters.
By law, the country's parliament cannot sit unless proceedings are broadcast live on the station.
While the upgrade work is carried out, programmes will be broadcast on a leased FM frequency.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is leading the project through it's international development arm.
Kordia, a New Zealand government telecommunications company, is carrying out the work.
The $US3 million upgrade is expected to be completed by September 2019 with a break in work during the cyclone season.
