Charter school reports mixed results

19:02 pm on 25 May 2016

Two Northland charter schools have reported good NCEA results, but poor performance in the national standards in reading, writing and maths.

The 2015 annual reports for the publicly funded private schools also show they each made a 9 percent profit last year.

Te kura hourua o Whangarei's report shows 100 percent achievement of University Entrance and NCEA levels two and three for those students who attempted them, and 84 percent achievement of level one.

But at the primary school, Te Kapehu Whetu, only 35 percent of children were at or above the National Standards for reading and maths, with 43 percent at or above for writing.

The report says the school last year switched from the English language standards to the Maori-medium Whanaketanga.

Charter schools are required to publish annual reports by the end of this month.
