Work will begin shortly on a $5 million upgrade to State Highway 1 in south Invercargill.
Waka Kotahi / New Zealand Transport Agency has awarded the contract to Fulton Hogan to build a four-leg roundabout at the intersection of the highway and Elles Road.
In the past decade, the site has seen 20 crashes, three of which caused death or serious injury.
It had been identified as a high risk site.
Waka Kotahi said the safety of cyclists and pedestrians would be at the forefront of thinking during the project.
A roundabout was selected because crash modelling showed it would be the safest option.
Work will begin in January and is expected to be complete in early 2022.
