Micronesian official jailed for money laundering

A Micronesian government official has been jailed for 18 months for money laundering.

Master Halbert was sentenced in the US District Court for Hawaii on Monday, after pleading guilty in April to taking cash bribes from a businessman.

Mr Halbert, a former aviation official in the Federated States of Micronesia, helped the businessman secure contracts worth millions of dollars.

Mr Halbert will serve 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

The businessman, Frank James Lyon, was sentenced to 30 months in prison in May.
