A man has been arrested following an "unprovoked" assault and carjacking in Palmerston North.
Police said the 46-year-old was arrested in New Plymouth last night following the incident on Thursday.
A 32-year-old received moderate injuries as a result of the carjacking.
Detective Sergeant Dave Wilson said it was "pleasing" to get a quick result following what appeared to be an "unprovoked attack".
"We would like to reassure the public that we take this kind of offending seriously and do all we can to hold offenders to account."
Police are appealing to the public for sightings of the stolen car which has yet to be found.
The vehicle is a white Toyota Altezza with the registration GDB780.
"If you have seen this vehicle or have information which may help police locate it, please contact police on 105, either by calling or online and reference file number 230406/4564.
"Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."
