A shoplifter cut an Auckland supermarket security guard with a broken bottle this afternoon, police say.

The attack comes a week after a security guard was stabbed in the neck and left in critical condition outside an Auckland mall.

Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said a woman attempted to leave a central city supermarket on Thursday afternoon, without paying for more than $100 of groceries.

The shoplifter escaped after a tussle, but later returned to the store, threw a bottle at security guards and then assaulted one with a broken bottle, inflicting a cut to his torso, he said.

Police arrested the woman with the assistance of a police dog unit, Baldwin said, but in the process, she spat at one officer and kicked another.

The injured guard was treated at the scene, while the woman was taken to hospital for a minor dog bite, Baldwin said.

She was charged with theft, aggravated assault, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of assaults.
