The former police minister in Tonga, Clive Edwards, has been returned to parliament in a by-election.

The election supervisor, Pita Vuki, says Mr Edwards won yesterday's vote for the Tongatapu seat, with 5459 votes.

A woman was elected to the seat for the two Niuas, Lepolo Mahe Taunisila.

The by-elections were held to replace the two popularly-elected MPs who were appointed to the cabinet after the general election in March.
