Israeli soldier killed in friendly fire incident

12:15 pm on 8 January 2011

The Israeli military says one soldier has been killed and four others injured in a friendly fire incident near the Gaza border.

The army says it happened during an exchange of fire with Palestinian militants who it says were trying to plant explosives under a security fence on the border, the BBC reports.

It was initially reported that the soldiers were hit by firing from within Gaza, but the military now says that wasn't the case.

Earlier, Israel apologised for killing an innocent Palestinian man in his 60s during an operation in the West Bank aimed at capturing a Hamas member who'd been released from jail by Palestinian officials.
