The Wanganui District Council has today closed its public consultation process for people to have their say on the spelling of the district's name.
In December, councillors voted 10-4 in favour of applying to the Geographic Board for an official name change.
The board must consult with the public, and the council also voted to run a public consultation process to ensure everyone has the opportunity to provide their views on whether Whanganui should be spelt with an 'h'.
The council said it received 1500 written submissions plus hundreds of responses to its online survey.
The public consultation process ran for two months.
Results of the submissions will be released later.
