Fiji clamps down on boat operators

Fiji's police and maritime safety officers have seized eight boats and issued their owners with infringement notices.

The boats were loading passengers in Rewa outside the capital Suva this week when they were seized.

The Maritime Safety Authority said the boats do not have compulsory safety appliances onboard like lifejackets.

It said the operators do not have survey certificates to indicate if the vessels are seaworthy.
