Police have impounded 10 vehicles after investigating illegal street racing in Lower Hutt over Anzac weekend.
They studied two hours of security camera footage to identify the drivers who were doing burnouts, skids and creating tyre smoke.
The vehicles have been impounded from around the lower North Island, including Levin, Palmerston North, Masterton and the Hutt Valley.
Police say some people involved refused to say who was behind the wheel.
They have been issued with notices asking them to provide those details within 14 days.
Three people will appear in court charged with driving offences.
Acting Road Policing Manager Senior Sergeant Matt Fitzgerald said some communities have had enough of the disruption.
He said often those involved are surprised when police turn up on their doorsteps because they think they have got away with it.
"I hope it gets the message across that anti-social road user behaviour won't be tolerated and that Police will thoroughly investigate offences and take enforcement action," Fitzgerald said in a statement.
