September 11 anniversary over two days in American Samoa

16:21 pm on 12 September 2003

American Samoa is using the second anniversary of the September 11th attacks to promote voluntary work in the territory.

On the first day of a two-day commemoration, a community service drive in Pago Pago will encourage people to give blood, get their blood pressure checked, and donate to voluntary services.

Our correspondent Fili Sagapolutele says many people had friends or relatives in New York and Washington two years ago.

Fili says American Samoa suffered its only loss in the so-called war against terrorism last month:

"So far there's only one American Samoan native in the US military that has died since the September 11th attacks, and this was a soldier who died last month in Iraq while he was on duty ."

Fili says many people in the territory felt at the time that the whole of the US was being attacked.
