Sports: Samoa miss out netball quarter finals

Northern Ireland extinguished Samoa's hopes of a quarter final spot at the Netball World Champs yesterday after a commanding 66-37 victory in their final pool match in Singapore.

In a winner takes all clash the world's 12th ranked side jumped out to a strong early lead to book a last eight showdown with England on Friday.

So Samoa will play Malaysia in the consolation rounds later today, as will Fiji against Singapore.

The Pacific Series champions picked up their first win of the tournament, 48-38 over Wales and, despite the disappointment of failing to reach the knockout rounds, co-coach Gabriel Qoro says their aim now must to be finish in ninth spot.

"Which is the same spot that we basically got in 2007 and basically that's going to be our aim now to defend the spot that we had."

The top eight teams have today off with New Zealand to play South Africa, Australia up against Malawi and Jamaica paired with Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago on Friday.

The Silver Ferns finished pool play with a commanding 75-23 win over Trinidad while the defending champion Diamonds thrashed Sri Lanka 97-20.
