Four Fiji Corrections officers charged with the murder of a remand prisoner last year have all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Onisimo Raboiliku, Semesa Bulikalougata, Suliasi Tubuna and Navitalai Kanavo also pleaded not guilty to assaulting two other remand prisoners on 12 and 13 April this year.

Bulikalougata is also charged with one count of common assault over the incident at the Natabua Corrections Centre.

The four prison officers have been bailed while the case is adjourned to 25 January.

In 2018, a prison officer was fired and five others suspended after the brutal beating of an inmate.

The Corrections Service said the incident happened at the Suva Remand Centre on 10 October.

The inmate was allegedly assaulted by prison guards and claimed he was deprived of medical attention.

The department said it had zero-tolerance on the assault of prisoners.

It strongly condemned the action of a few rogue personnel who had tarnished the good work being done by majority of the officers.
