PNG to spend millions on Highlands Highway

19:33 pm on 22 June 2005

The Papua New Guinea Government has allocated an unprecedented 68 million US dollars for the rehabilitation of the Highlands Highway.

The critical link to the hinterland of Papua New Guinea has been run down for years and has been seen as inhibiting the country's economic development.

The National Planning Minister, Arthur Somare, says the Government is serious about restoring the Highway.

The funding includes donor funding from AusAid, the ADB and Japan.
