Police want to speak to people who may have "crucial" information about a fatal crash near Taupō.

In a statement, Senior Sergeant Jason Henderson said two people were killed in the crash on Broadlands Road on 5 January while another person was critically injured.

The crash occurred around 4.10pm and involved two vehicles.

Henderson said the investigation had shown that one of the vehicles involved was travelling in a line with a number of other vehicles.

"The drivers or occupants of those vehicles may not have been aware of the collision but may have crucial information that could assist police," he said.

"So far we have spoken with the occupant of one of the vehicles and would like to hear from the others in the line of traffic, or anyone who was travelling on Broadlands Road, near White Road and the PermaPine timber mill, about this time."

Henderson said if motorists were unfamiliar with the area, it had a number of distinctive signs, such as for Landcorp and Wairakei Estate.

Anyone with information was asked to contact police on 105 or go online referencing file number 240105/9005.
