Hollywood star Jason Momoa has urged his millions of followers to support Hīkoi mō Te Tiriti and stand with Māori against the proposed Treaty Principles Bill.

The Aquaman and Game of Thrones actor took to social media sharing footage of Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke performing 'Ka Mate' haka and sharing his backing for the movement.

The video of the Te Pāti Māori MP had been viewed hundreds of millions of times on social media platforms and was picked up by international media.

In his post Momoa wrote, "They are fighting for their rights, their culture, and their coming generations.

"Our Māori cousins have given us so much, from some of the best Pasifika films and actors to overwhelming support on our own 'āina at Mauna Kea. Let's return the favour."

The hīkoi against the Treaty Principles Bill reached Porirua on Monday, after originally coming from Cape Reinga, on its way to Parliament.

After a dramatic first reading, the Bill passed and is on its way to the Justice Committee for consideration.

Momoa gave a six minute speech calling for action from global leaders at the UN in 2019.

The native Hawaiian advocated for the Pacific Islands, oceans and planet in regards to climate change.

Momoa was also an official advocate for the UN environment programme Life Below Water.

He is currently touring New Zealand with his 'Oof Tatata' bandmates, playing shows around the country.
