How could NZ spies get it so wrong, asks Fiji opposition

The opposition leader in Fiji, Ro Teimumu Kepa, says she is not surprised to hear of New Zealand spying on Fiji given Fiji's coup-infested past.

But she says New Zealand's spying apparatus may have mistakenly focused on Naboro, the main rubbish dump near Suva, given the Prime Minister John Key's recent complimentary remarks on Fiji's progress to democracy.

She says she is surprised at the extent of the information gathered and she is not sure what New Zealand or the United States would find useful in the ordinary chatter of Fiji's citizens.

The opposition leader says such information gathering is an invasion of privacy.

Ro Teimumu was reacting to last week's reports that New Zealand's electronic spy agency, the GCSB, engaged in mass collection of data from countries in the region, passing it on to the United States.
