CNMI against airspace restriction push

15:05 pm on 26 November 2014

The United States Department of Defense wants restrictions on the airspace around Tinian and Saipan airports in the Northern Marianas.

The US is negotiating plans to make use of parts of the territory for military training purposes and for a default airfield for Guam.

The Federal Aviation Administration currently restricts military activity from 450 metres above and below ground level within three nautical miles of airports used by civilians.

The Commonwealth Ports Authority says it is against the military push to change the FAA's rules.

It says it wants a full public hearing and the opportunity to comment on the matter.
