Northland police have arrested two men in relation to a firearm incident in Kaikohe this morning.
In a statement, Far North Area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Dalzell said police responded to a Kaikohe address at 10am this morning after a firearm was allegedly discharged.
Several police units attended the address where an illegal firearm was located and two people were subsequently arrested.
Two men aged 21-years-old and 49-years-old are due to appear in Kaikohe District Court tomorrow on charges of carelessly discharging a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Dalzell said the incident was not believed to be related to any gang conflict in the area.
"These arrests follow a series of arrests police have made in connection with firearms violence that has occurred in the Far North community in recent months, however we do not believe this incident is directly linked to any recent gang conflict in the area.
"We have an extremely low tolerance for anti-social behaviour or violence in our communities and we welcome anyone who may have information on those illegally in possession of firearms to come forward," he said.
Police would continue to treat firearms incidents extremely seriously, Dalzell said.
