Scott Brown was a Senator from Massachusetts from 2010 to 2013, but was defeated when standing for re-election.

His appointment is being tipped by the Boston Globe, his local newspaper.

Since leaving the Senate, Mr Brown has stayed in the public eye as a political pundit on the Fox News Channel, and was an early backer of Donald Trump's campaign for the Presidency.

He is a lawyer and former model, and in 1982 won Cosmopolitan magazine's "America's Sexiest Man" contest, posing in the magazine's centrefold.

The Boston Globe reported that Mr Brown receiving the post was likely not imminent and that he must undergo extensive vetting and earn Senate confirmation.

The White House press office referred questions to Mr Brown, who did not respond to several requests for comment.
