Maisey Rika takes five music awards

Maori singer-songwriter Maisey Rika has won five categories in this year's Maori Music Awards.

Whakatane-based Rika won four categories - Best Maori Female Solo Artist, Best Maori Traditional Reo Maori Album and Best Song by a Maori Artist - at the awards ceremony in Hastings last Friday.

As well, Rika and director Shae Stiring jointly won Best Maori Video by a Maori Artist for her song Tangaroa Whakamautai.

Singer Pieter T scooped two titles - Best Maori Urban Rap/Hip Hop/RnB Album and Best Maori Male Solo Artist - while Wellington singer Toni Huata secured the Best Maori Pop Album for Hopukia.

Best Maori Urban Roots Album went to Te Awanui Reeder, while Wellington's Kirsten Te Rito won the title of Radio Airplay Maori Language Record of the Year for her song, Oranga.

Stan Walker took the Radio Airplay Record of the Year award for Take it Easy.

Meanwhile, Ngamoni Huata won the nominated section for the award Keeper of Traditions, the Music Industry Award went to Golden Harvest and a Lifetime Contribution to Maori Music Award was given to The Waipatu Maori Catholic Club.
