The Princess Bride has been a family favorite for close to three decades. The cult classic’s been ranked by the American Film Institute as one of the top 100 Greatest Love Stories and by the Writers Guild of America as one of the top 100 screenplays of all time.
But what’s it like having your most famous line in your most fan-loved film yelled at you in the street every day for the rest of your life? Actor Cary Elwes, who played farmhand Westley – as well as the Dread Pirate Roberts – has written a book about it. He spoke to Radio New Zealand producer, Charlotte Graham.
As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales From the Making of the Princess Bride is published by Simon and Schuster. It gives a first-person account and behind-the-scenes look at the making of the cult classic film filled with stories, pictures, and interviews with Cary Elwes’ costars Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, and Mandy Patinkin, as well as author and screenwriter William Goldman, producer Norman Lear, and director Rob Reiner.
This interview is the extended version of one which appeared in our new podcast, On The Dial.
