A critically ill man found lying in the middle of a Christchurch road overnight is thought to have been hit by a car.

The man was found on the road near Gayhurst Bridge in the Christchurch suburb of Avonside.
Police said the man was taken to hospital just after 2.30am.
Initial reports suggest he had been hit by a car.
Gayhurst Road is closed near the bridge.
