Police in Tauranga say a person is dead after being hit by a freight train near Papamoa Beach.
Acting Senior Sergeant Nigel Ramsden says railway workers found a body on the train track on Tuesday afternoon near Kairua Road and State Highway 2.
A KiwiRail spokesperson says the line is used only by freight trains and has been closed while police investigate.
