New Zealand has beaten India by 40 runs in the first cricket test at Eden Park in Auckland.

Chasing 407 for victory, the tourists were bowled out for 366 in the evening session on day four yesterday.

The home side took nine wickets on Sunday with Neil Wagner, the best of their bowlers, claiming four wickets for 62 runs off 25 overs.

The nail biting match was evenly poised for most of the day with India's opening batsman Shikar Dhawan scoring a century after his side resumed on Sunday morning on 87 for 1.

He combined with Virat Kohli for a third wicket stand of 126 before India were undone by New Zealand's pace attack.

Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum was named man of the match after scoring 224 in the first innings, his second double century in test match cricket.
