Travel agents will receive up to $48 million in government funding to try and claw back money spent by New Zealanders on overseas travel that was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The fund will pay a fee to agents who secure refunds or credits on behalf of customers.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment estimates that nearly $700 million is locked up overseas because of the pandemic.

Robyn Galloway is the managing director of the Innovative Travel Company and the chair of the New Zealand Travel Industry Suppliers Group.
