Slaughter of cows banned in Fiji

11:05 am on 13 February 2011

The ministry of agriculture in Fiji has banned the slaughter of cows to protect the dwindling cattle population on the islands.

Animal health director Misiraini Raisuqe says stock numbers have been decreasing steadily over the years.

He says livestock officers are working with famers to ensure cows are not slaughtered.

Mr Raisuqe says Fiji has about 450,000 cattle.
