New Zealand Rugby is aware of an allegation involving a player from Mid-Canterbury, it says.
In a statement, its chief executive, Steve Tew, said it had been providing support to the Mid-Canterbury Rugby Union in relation to the matter.
He said, as a court suppression order was in place, he was unable to make any further comment but New Zealand Rugby would continue to monitor this situation closely.
Police said a man was arrested on 2 October, and charged with assault with intent to commit rape.
He was next due to appear in court in Gisborne on 31 October.
