The government has put legislation that would force tech giants to pay media companies for journalism on hold.

The Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill was delayed last month, with the responsible Minister Paul Goldsmith saying it was not ready.

Goldsmith's office has now confirmed the legislation is on hold.

It comes as Australia's government announces it will create new rules to strong-arm the likes of Meta and Google to pay for hosting news on their platforms.

"We will evaluate how Australia's legislation unfolds over the next few months, and if it lands well, consider whether or not we seek to shift our approach in that direction," Goldsmith said.
