Home detention for former Maori welfare manager

20:48 pm on 3 August 2011

A former manager of an iwi welfare agency found guilty of fraud has been sentenced to eight months' home detention and ordered to pay $20,000 in reparations.

Arapeta Victor Hamilton had earlier been convicted of five counts of fraud brought by the Serious Fraud Office and was sentenced in the Auckland District Court.

The 53-year-old was formerly the director and chief executive of Ngapuhi Iwi Social Services Ltd.

The company had been set up to assist Maori children with community and government-funded projects.

The court found Hamilton had diverted funds worth $147,500 to cover personal expenses, including mortgage repayments and investments in a nightclub.
