Man U out to maintain proud England record in Europe

07:52 am on 8 April 2010

Sir Alex Ferguson has sprung a major surprise an hour before kickoff by naming Wayne Rooney in Manchester United's starting lineup to play Bayern Munich in their quarter-final decider at Old Trafford.

The England striker injured his ankle a week ago, and Ferguson ruled him out of contention for this morning's game 24 hours ago.

It's up to Manchester United this morning to maintain English football's proud recent record in the Champions league.

For the last six years England have provided at least one semi-finalist, and there's been at least one English team in the final since 2004.

Lyon go into the all-French quarter-final decider with a 3-1 lead over Bordeaux.
