Police will not confirm whether they are investigating four Chinese fugitives alleged to be hiding out in New Zealand.

State-owned China Daily has reported that the four former high-ranking officials were wanted by the Chinese government on charges of embezzling or misappropriating public money.

It said they came to New Zealand between 2002 and 2007 and were now living in Auckland.

The report quotes a government official calling on countries harbouring the alleged fugitives to extradite them.

New Zealand police said while it sometimes made inquiries on behalf of overseas police, it did not comment on those investigations.
