18:50 pm on 4 December 2006

A project in French Polynesia to have the two Marquesas Islands classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites goes before a national commission in Paris in mid January.

The Tahitipresse reports a delegation will present the project to a commission, which will decide which whether to put before UNESCO.

The French Polynesian government and cultural officials are calling for the two Marquesas Islands to be classified as mixed cultural and natural properties.

They are hoping that can be accomplished by 2009.
