One person is dead after a head-on crash between two trucks in Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services were called to the crash between a logging truck and a five-tonne truck-and-trailer unit on McKee Road, south of Kawerau, about 4am.

A police spokesperson said the driver of the logging truck was uninjured but one of the two occupants of the other vehicle was killed.

The road is closed and was likely to take hours to clear.

Meanwhile, three people are in hospital after a serious crash between a truck and a stationwagon in Wallacetown, north of Invercargill.

A police spokesperson said the stationwagon pulled out from a service station and into the path of the oncoming truck late yesterday afternoon.

Three passengers, aged 52, 20 and 16, were taken to Southland hospital, with the 52-year-old woman later transferred to Dunedin Hospital with head injuries.

The truck driver was unharmed.
