French Polynesia has extended its curfew until mid-January in a bid to weaken the Covid-19 outbreak.

However, the French High Commission said the curfew would be shortened by one hour on Christmas Eve and on New Year's Eve.

The health minister said the pandemic's latest wave had peaked as the number of new infections had dropped to below 100 a day.

Almost 16,000 cases have been recorded and 91 people died.

A Covid-19 fatality acknowledged by the government was the one of a former newspaper editor Jean-Claude Soulier.

All but 62 Covid-19 cases were detected after the borders were reopened in July and mandatory quarantine requirements were abolished in an effort to boost tourism.
