Papua New Guinea police say the travelling public is facing major difficulties after disgruntled Enga villagers set up a road block at Laiagam on the Wabag/Porgera road.

They were protesting at inadequate payments from the Enga Provincial Works Department for losses during the sealing of the road.
Police said road blocks had been set up along 4 kilometres of the road stretching from Aiyak village to Kera Bridge.

The Porgera Operations Contingent Commander Chief Inspector Nelson Chanei said the frustrated villagers dismantled the Kera Bridge after they were dissatisfied with the payment made to them on Friday last week.
He said they had removed the culvert and dug three huge drains across the road.

A spokesperson for the villagers said they want to be paid fairly, taking account of property loss and environment destruction.
Mr Chanei said a whole of government approach is needed to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile Police are staying at the Kera Bridge after threats the villagers would also stop foot traffic across it.
