French Polynesia's opposition says it will pass a law to annul any budget that the President Gaston Tong Sang may pass.
The leader of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira, Gaston Flosse, made the comment in a television interview amid a protracted crisis over the 2011 budget which the opposition majority in the assembly passed ten days ago.
Mr Tong Sang, whose support has slumped to about a fifth of the assembly's membership, has insisted that the opposition cannot impose a budget.
The French high commissioner says he will have the courts decide whether the budget as passed stands.
But Mr Flosse says the opposition will stop any of Mr Tong Sang's budgets and urged him to resign.
However, Mr Flosse says his party's deputy leader, Edouard Fritch, will remain the vice-president of the government for the time being.
Mr Flosse says despite an overwhelming opposition majority, it won't lodge a no confidence motion because within its ranks there are disagreements.
He says he cannot accept the demand by the pro-independence camp that French Polynesia be reinscribed on the UN list of territories to be decolonised.
