Heinz Watties quiet over job cuts

17:19 pm on 15 October 2014

Heinz Watties is staying tight-lipped about the estimated 100 jobs it is aiming to axe in New Zealand.

The food production company says it is restructuring, and will shed 245 jobs in New Zealand, Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The company employs 1600 Heinz staff in Hawke's Bay, Auckland and Christchurch.

But it has not yet said where the job losses will take place, nor what types of workers are affected.

It said that reducing its workforce will help it become more flexible and efficient in competitive markets.

Unions say the company failed to consult them about plans to shed the jobs.

Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union and the Service and Food Workers Union said the media found out before they did.

Union spokesperson Chas Muir said it had been difficult getting the right information.
