Hikoi against marine bill wanted

05:32 am on 12 February 2011

The New Zealand Maori Council says preparation for a hikoi against the Marine and Coastal Area Bill has been called for by tribal elders in Tamaki Makaurau (the Auckland region).

The Maori Affairs Select Committee reported back to Parliament two weeks early on the Marine and Coastal Area Bill, which it recommends be passed unchanged.

However, Ngaire Te Hira from the Maori Council says the kaumatua and kuia of Tamaki Makaurau have moved a vote of no confidence in the Maori Party leadership.

She says the bill does not safeguard the foreshore and sea-bed and tramples over the mana of the people.

She says they did not march in 2004 for what the Government and the Maori Party are now supporting, so they will have to get out on the road again.
