The man who died under restraint at Whangārei Hospital this week has been named.
He was Bradley Gibbons, 43, from Whangārei.
Police were called to the hospital's mental health unit, Tumanako on Wednesday night to deal an unrelated incident.
But while they were there, Mr Gibbons reportedly attacked a staff member.
The officers and other staff stepped in to restrain him but Mr Gibbons passed out and couldn't be revived.
He died just after midnight.
His death has been referred to the Coroner, and police have notified WorkSafe and the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
