New health clinic in Solomons capital expected to cut pressure on main hospital

19:32 pm on 29 July 2010

It's hoped a new paediatric pikinini clinic which has opened in the Solomon Islands capital will help reduce child mortality.

The Solomon Star reports the Mayor of Honiara Andrew Mua says it is an achievement to provide quality health services for every child in the city.

Mr Mua says this will help health workers to reduce child deaths by managing common childhood illnesses, such as acute respiratory infection, malaria, diarrhoea, skin infection and preventative diseases.

Health Permanent secretary, Dr Lester Ross, says the new clinic is significant as children use the most health services, and it's expected to reduce demand at the National Referral Hospital.

The facility has been built with 160-thousand US dollars of funding from NZAID through the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, in partnership with Honiara City Council.

The clinic will provide medical treatment to children from next Monday.
