The French government has decided to extend debate over France's social and economic crisis to include New Caledonia.

Last week, the President Emmanuel Macron launched consultations on taxation and public expenditure, public services, democracy and citizenship.

The French High Commission in Noumea said even if some of the topics relate to powers transferred to New Caledonia, Caledonians are invited to take part.

It said mayors and residents can organise meetings if they wish and use the tools on the website dedicated to the debate.

The consultations end in March and the findings will be published in late April.

Last week, the French High Commission in Papeete said debates of the kind organised on the mainland of France and its departments wouldn't be replicated in French Polynesia to review, for example, the autonomy status.

It said submissions from Tahiti could be made on the French internet site set up for the debate.

In his first nationwide televised response to the street protests, Mr Macron also explicitly addressed citizens living overseas.
