17:12 pm on 29 October 2014

The leader of the world's largest democracy is set to visit Fiji next month.

India's Narendra Modi will visit Myanmar and Australia, and then head to Suva for a one-day visit on November the 19th.

The Indian embassy in Suva has confirmed the visit today to the Fiji media.

He will be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Fiji since Indira Gandhi travelled there in 1981.

Shortly after the election this year, Mr Modi vowed to make India-Fiji relations stronger in coming years.

He will be in Australia for the G20 summit, on November the 15th and 16th.

37.5 percent of Fijians are of Indian ethnicity - the largest proportion of a country's population outside India.
