The Black Caps battled through to 162-5 at stumps on day two of the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka in Christchurch, still 193 runs short of the visitors' first innings total.

New Zealand will resume on Saturday morning with Daryl Mitchell on 40 and Michael Bracewell on 9.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand ran through the tail of the Sri Lankan batting order, needing 16 overs to take the four remaining wickets as Sri Lanka posted 355.

Black Caps captain Tim Southee secured his 15th Test five-wicket bag when he claimed the final Sri Lankan wicket.

In reply, the Black Caps openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway took a slow and steady approach to the chase.

Conway was the first wicket to fall for 30 and was quickly followed by Kane Williamson (1) and Henry Nicholls (2).

Latham hung around on his homeground of Hagley Oval and made 67 before he was bowled by Asitha Fernando who had also dismissed Conway.
