Bomb disposal experts have detonated an unexploded mortar shell which was found at a house in the Auckland suburb of Epsom.

Cordons have now been lifted.

Residents from several streets near the Pukenui Road house were evacuated after the shell was found shortly after 5pm on Thursday.

Police were unable to remove the explosive on last night, so precautions were put in place to mitigate any risk, police said in a statement.

Today the Defence Force explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) experts set off a series of controlled detonations to remove the bomb.

It is safe for evacuated residents to return to their homes, police said.
