The boy was named yesterday as Leon Michael leFleming Jayet-Cole.

Leon was taken to hospital on Wednesday afternoon with head injuries and died in Christchurch Hospital on Friday morning.

The police said his death was being investigated as a homicide inquiry.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson said they were focusing their investigation around Leon's activities on Wednesday prior to being taken to hospital.

He said Leon was in the presence of his family and teachers throughout that time.

Detective Senior Sergeant Anderson said they understand the public was interested in why a normal day ended so tragically for Leon, but police were unable to provide any further information about how he sustained his injuries.

Police have already spoken to members of Leon's family and staff from his school, who were all said to be co-operating.
