New Zealand Cricket is playing down suggestions the Napier pitch is not up to scratch for the second test starting at McLean Park on Thursday.

The pitch to be used is to one side of the strip originally scheduled to be used, which was affected by patchiness after reseeding following the West Indies series.

New Zealand Cricket spokesman Stephen Hill says some Indian media have suggested the pitch is a cause for concern but he says ground staff are sure issue is purely a cosmetic one and not the result of disease.

However the condition of the pitch could well lead to New Zealand taking two spinners into the match.

Head of the selection panel and former New Zealand captain Glenn Turner's hinted that with the pace bowlers' inability to trouble India's batsmen in Hamilton a change of approach could be in order.
