Mal Meninga was announced as the new Australian head coach last week, despite still being contracted to PNG, leaving an opening with the Kumuls.

PNG Rugby League CEO Bob Cutmore suggested a Papua New Guinean deserves a chance to fill the vacancy, citing Marum as the obvious candidate.

The man himself says is keen to step up to the top job after serving a long apprenticeship.

"That's something I probably want to do. I've been assisting the national team for the last ten years already and I've worked under different coaches there so if given the chance I can probably put my hand up, yep - it's all up to the board to decide. We've got a World Cup coming up in 2017 too so that's not far away".

Michael Marum says the PNG Hunters Queensland Cup side remains his main focus but he believes he would have no issue managing both jobs.
